4 tips to prepare for your kitchen renovation

Before we begin construction on your kitchen renovation, DelBiondo Home Solutions will take care of protecting your home.  This includes removing any items hanging in rooms adjacent to the kitchen, hanging plastic sheets to help prevent dust from spreading throughout the house, and laying floor protection in any space that might experience construction traffic.

The following 4 tips will help you learn more about preparing your home and family for your upcoming kitchen renovation.

Tip 1:  Remove all items from your kitchen

Set aside the bare-minimum of items you will need during the renovation such as a plate setting for each member in your house hold, microwavable bowls and plates, and mixing spoons.  Then, box, tape, and label all items you do not plan to use during the renovation.  You will want to store the boxes in a safe place away from the kitchen to keep them free of dust and ready to be used again once the kitchen is complete. By labeling each box, restocking your brand new cabinets will be quick and easy.  This is also a great time to pack up items you no longer use and donate them.

If there is an item that is too heavy to move from your existing kitchen, we can take care of it for you before we start demolition.

Tip 2:  Create a temporary kitchen

If you do not want to be eating out every meal for the duration of the kitchen renovation, we suggest setting up a make-shift kitchen in a room far away from the construction zone.

  1. Lay down a sheet of plywood or something similar to protect your flooring from any spills or food.

  2. Make a temporary countertop with a folding table or a protected dining room table. You may also want to set up temporary shelving for your food.

  3. Since you will no longer have access to your stove and oven, we suggest gathering small appliances such as a coffee pot, microwave, crock pot, and a hot plate. Your grill will come in handy too! You can also prepare meals ahead of time and divide them into single-portion servings to be stocked in your freezer. When you are ready to eat, simply defrost and microwave your pre-cooked meals.

  4. Stock up on recyclable plates, napkins, cups, and utensils. Setting up a dishwashing station near a utility sink will come in handy for your non-disposable dishes. If you do not have a utility sink, you can streamline cleanup by using a cooler with a drain plug to function as a utility bin and wash basin using a water hose or bathtub.

  5. If you’d like, we can move your refrigerator to your make-shift kitchen. Just please let us know ahead of time. Another option would be to invest in a mini-fridge if there is not enough room in your temporary kitchen for a full-size fridge.

Tip 3:  Protect your pets

You don't want to see your pet covered in saw dust or tracking paint throughout the house, and neither do we! Keep your pets away from the construction area.  The best option is to keep them in a closed room away from all the work.

Tip 4:  Keep in mind the big picture!

A short period of inconvenience will be worth a brand new, beautiful kitchen. Focus on the finished product and enjoy the process as much as you can.   If there is anything we can help with to make the experience more enjoyable, please let us know!
